“Nice loop covering the mounds of Ft. Ancient.”
— Chris Davis
Features: Fall Colors — Spring — Views
This trail takes you along the margins of the mounds of Fort Ancient. Beginning at the parking lot, look for the sign pointing left, it may not be totally obvious depending on the time of year you visit, but keep close to the mounds and continue on.
You'll descend into the woods about half way through, the terrain can be treacherous during the spring (very soggy and slick) across the deepest of the ravines you'll find bridges to cross. Coming back out of the woods into the clearing, face south and continue to the south overlook. While not as stunning as the north overlook, it is still worth taking in.
Stick close to the woods and you'll see a small spur that will lead you to the edge of the mound builders constructions, there is a convenient bench to grab a bite to eat or just talk with a friend. Follow back along the edge of the woods and cross the parking lot to return to the beginning of this trail.
