“A lightly trafficked trail in Occoneechee State Park with occasional lake views.”— Maddy Hatter
To access, start at the middle trailhead for the Panhandle Multi-use Trail near the horse parking area. The trailhead is located just behind two picnic benches and an information sign within the horse parking/Equestrian campground. Follow the white blazes of the Panhandle Multi-use Trail which starts by skirting the horse parking area and exiting by a gate at the end of the horse parking area. Take the wide horse trail to the left for about 0.5 mile.
A signpost is marked for the Panhandle Lake Loop Trail (may use a different name on the sign) on the right hand side of the trail. Take this trail to the right which loops around four inlets before reconnecting with the Panhandle Multi-use Trail. This part of the trail is singletrack and can be overgrown in places. There are occasional views of the lake from the trail.
From the eastern intersection with Panhandle Multi-use Trail, I recommend heading back west on Panhandle Multi-use Trail to make a loop, rather than heading further east.
