The usual federal wilderness area regulations and restrictions apply here. A Wilderness permit is required to enter a Wilderness on the Mt. Hood National Forest between May 15 and October 15. Practice Leave No Trace (LNT) backcountry skills and ethics. Camp 100 feet from fragile areas; bury human waste at least 200 feet from water, trails, and campsites. This trail is usually covered by snow from November to June.

Description

This trail starts at Oregon Higway 35, crosses over Gumjuwac Saddle, then descends to end at its intersection with the Badger Creek Trail #479 along Gumjuwac Creek.

From Highway 35, the trail climbs steadily for its first 1.8 miles up a series of switchbacks to a viewpoint of Mount Hood to the west. It then continues up for another 0.6 mile to Gumjuwac Saddle and a junction with Bennett Pass Road (Forest Road 3550), the Gunsight Trail #685, and the Divide Trail #458. After crossing Bennett Pass Road, the #480 continues downhill for another 2.2 miles to its junction with the Badger Creek Trail #479.

From the #480/#479 junction, you can make a loop by turning right on to the #479 and following it uphill to its junction with the Divide Trail #458 uphill of the west side of Badger Lake. You then follow the Divide Trail #458 back uphill to Gumjuwac Saddle. This loop, though three miles longer than doubling-back on the #480, is not as steep a return.

Parking at the #480 trailhead itself on Highway 35 is limited and there are no amenities.

Hiked up to the saddle from Badger Creek and didn't see a soul, a few fallen trees and spots where overgrowth has blocked the trail but wasn't bad.
