Overview
This is a very fun route up a mountain. It is very high up and will lead you to a castle with an awesome view!
Need to Know
A walking stick or trekking poles are recommended, and you should bring cash to eat at the restaurant near the start.
Description
You might be surprised about the hike being an out-and-back, but there is no direct way to create a loop as it is on a mountain. Be careful on the
Pla des Pouet Road, as some drivers are drunk. The way this hike is commonly done is to start at the village center, go to the restaurant at the start, and go back. You may also decide to eat at the restaurant near the beginning of the hike, as it is a hard trail to hike on an empty stomach.
On the road, there are a lot of turns, but not many on the
Castle Trail. Be careful near the end, as the rocks are slippery. Along the way, you also might hear some sheep.
The biggest turn is near the end, where you arrive at a large area with several cars parked and have three options. You must continue straight towards the castle. The long climb (about 15 min.) at the end is very slippery. This climb is not recommended for young children and pets.
Flora & Fauna
There are a lot of sheep on the trails and (maybe) on the road. If you can reach them, there are red berries that are safe for eating.
History & Background
The castle was successfully defended by King James II from invaders (otherwise, it wouldn't be here today).
