Family Friendly Trail is large enough to accommodate small groups hiking together and, with the exception of a few steep sections, can be navigated by people with different fitness levels.

Description

"The 10" as it's usually referred to by locals, is a popular trail in the Varese area. The trail incorporates a mix of streams, short rocky sections, and roots while still being an easy trail that can be navigated to from the city.

For those willing to try this trail, almost anyone can do it, no advanced hiking skills needed. There are only a few steep climbs, the rest is steady climbing, combined with short descents and a lot of rolling doubletrack. Some rocks and roots can be found in the trail, but nothing significant.

There are multiple options in the middle of the trail, if you're unsure about the direction to follow, always look for the sign "310a" (the official number of the trail) and the direction "Orino", which is the name of the town where the trail ends. The trail runs deep into the forest, so you can only spot Lake Varese on your left from time to time, especially in autumn or winter when trees have fewer leaves, otherwise the main and most interesting view is the forest itself. For the same reason, remember to dress properly in cold months, it can be colder than the weather outside of the forest.

The best time to hike this trail is during the week, being a very well-known trail means that during weekends there is some heavy traffic, especially in summer, made of any type of biker, plus runners and hikers using the trail. On the way back, it can be followed in the reverse direction, or if you don't mind some downhill, you can climb up to Monte Morto and then do the easy downhill that will connect in the middle of this trail.

The park is forbidden to any engine-based vehicle (except park guards), so there is no danger of facing cars or motorbikes, and you can fully enjoy the silence that is always here, other than the sound of your feet! There is a large parking lot 50 meters from the beginning of the trail, so it's really easy to reach the trail with a car or van. The road up to the parking is all paved.

Note: the complete trail starts in the city over paved road, so you can choose to start it in Via Al Poggio and enjoy a fully off-road trail, or do some road hiking and start from downtown Varese. Also at its end, you can choose as I described to arrive at "Quattro Strade", which is easily identifiable thanks to the sign with this name and you'll see four roads (the meaning in Italian of Quattro Strade) crossing, or you can follow the trail to its real end, with some more rocky sections and steep descent over a loose, rocky trail down to the town of Orino.
