Description

Heading west from Champagne, Picnic Table is a rough, narrow, demanding hike that connects to the trails that take you through and around Sugarloaf Peak. The climbs are short but steep and very eroded. Hike with your eyes wide open, and watch for the occasional cactus in the middle of the trail and ocotillo hanging across the trail at face-height. Between the demanding climbs, the trail is classic old-school singletrack, 8 inches wide, and about as close to simply hiking across the wilderness as it gets.

The views are sweeping, with the Imperial Dunes backed by the mountain range behind. Sugarloaf takes on an entirely different character as you approach the peak. From the distance, it seems quite diminutive, but up close and personal it is much more impressive to behold.
