Family Friendly Taking the tram makes this route easier but still allows for amazing views.

Overview

Though strenuous, this is a great hike that leaves right from Juneau. Along the way, you'll be able to enjoy the spectacular views of the area.

Description

There are a variety of adventures to be had combining the different trail options along these peaks. Most famous is to continue further to Mt. Roberts.

This out-and-back outing is one of the most popular hikes in Juneau for its amazing views, and accessibility due to the tram. It is popular among tourist and locals to use the tram to either go up, down, or both. If time allows, hiking the whole trail is a great experience. The tram ride will save ~1,750’ elevation in each direction, and a one-way ride down can be had for $5 in the gift shop/restaurant, making this an accessible option for hikers of all abilities. This restaurant is also a great place to refill water bottles if you’ve decided to tackle the whole trail. As another note, dogs aren’t allowed to ride the tram.

Accessible from March to October, parts of the year will bring different wildflowers. All or portions of this trail are also popular for trail running, but most hikers will do the whole thing in 5-7 hours. Depending on time of year and melting snows, you'll likely find at least a few water sources to filter water from if you'd rather not carry a lot.

Gastineau Peak is located about 1.1 miles from the summit of Mt Roberts; just prior to Gastineau Peak, you'll find a quick turn off to the summit of Gold Ridge.
