Description

This is a beautiful trail that follows the highest ridge of the Rila mountains. Head south from the summit of Musala and follow the trail down a quick, steep descent to the ridge. The trail will follow this up and down pattern until you reach the turn off for Hizha Granchar (about 7.5 km).

From there, the trail will climb for the next 4.5 km, gradually getting steeper as you pass just below the summit of Vrah Kovach. The trail then descends and become a pleasant grassy track for much of the next 8 km. This section is very enjoyable and there are great views of Rila to the north and Pirin to the south.

After one last short climb, you'll reach an intersection; follow the signs to Ribni Ezera, and the trail will descend steeply over rocky terrain. Be careful here as many of the rocks can move. Then you'll reach the final steep descent to Hizha Ribni Ezera; you'll see it below. You can follow the trail that is many switchbacks and allows for good hiking. Some people choose to cut directly down the face, however, do so at your own risk.
