The Howell Trail starts along Route 218 and climbs steeply along a ridge to wonderful viewpoints of the Hudson River and Hudson Highland State Park across the river. Once you top out on the ridge (one mile), the trail rolls along through open sections of rock outcroppings and trees. The next viewpoint is at the summit of North Point but there is no marker for this point.

After this viewpoint, the trail begins to descend, running along a stream below, which you eventually have to cross. There is a second stream to cross before you begin another very steep climb up the south side of Storm King Mountain. The Howell Trail tops a ridge and there is a white connector trail on the left. Turn right and after a short hike, you'll reach the By-Pass Trail. Turn left staying on Howell until it ends at the junction of the Stillman Trail and Bluebird Trail.
