Overview
Hike 5.25 miles on the North Country Trail across a variety of native grasslands between two campgrounds within North Dakota's Lonetree Wildlife Management Area (the state's largest WMA).
Need to Know
Free camping is allowed at both Jensen and Coal Mine Lake Campgrounds, which feature tentsites, pit toilets, fire rings, and water pumps.
Caution should be taken crossing Hwy 14 and also along the short roadwalk in between the lakes.
Description
Along the way, you'll climb up to Teepee Ring Hill to enjoy a sweeping 360° vista and hike along Sheyenne and Coal Mine Lakes. The NCT is marked with yellow Carsonite posts displaying the NCT emblem and is mowed annually (usually by the end of July).
Flora & Fauna
Hikers will encounter a variety of grassland wildlife and may even spot a moose.
