Description
Starting in Zermatt village, this hike joins a well-maintained and well signposted path to Furi, partially in the shadow of the Zermatt to Furi gondola. After passing through fields, chalets and farmyards, you'll get to the Furi gondola station. Pass by it on the right, and follow the signs to Zum See, a small collection of houses in an alpine meadow. The trail passes directly through the Zum See restaurant's outdoor seating which fills the the small hamlet's center. Follow the signposts back in to Zermatt.
The area around Furi was formed by ancient glaciers that have long since retreated. In their place are green pastures, thin larch forests, rounded hillocks, and rock formations. As it retreated, the Gorner Glacier left behind a landscape of polished rock.
Flora & Fauna
Alpine wildflowers in abundance (April). You may catch glimpses of marmots and chamoix if you are lucky.
