The trail starts under the existing railroad and follows the abandoned Miller to Metolius railroad grade. This is the old railroad grade that came to Metolius, OR at the turn of the century.

The hike wanders down the canyon along Willow Creek. For the first few miles, the creek only runs in the winter months. But in the summer, you can hear the water running under the lava rock bead. As you head down the grade, you'll pass the Willow Creek climbing area (see Mountain Project); you'll also pass two of the train tunnels that were dynamited in the 40’s. Half way down the grade is passable by vehicles. The grade also makes are good bicycle trip.
