Family Friendly Relatively easy hike with few dangerous obstacles.

Description

This hike starts at a nice paved trailhead with a bathroom. The first 3/4 of a mile is a steep climb with switchbacks (800'-900' elevation gain). The trail is well used and easy to follow. When you reach the rim of the caldera, you can either go left or right to circumnavigate the rim. The rim is a little less then two miles around.

A radio tower is in operation at the highpoint of the butte. The terrain is generally easy to navigate with several steep inclines and rocky spots. Some people prefer to have trekking poles or a walking stick for the hike. Great views of the surrounding area can be had from the edge of the rim, and the butte itself is interesting to observe and explore.

This was taken just after getting up and over the western rim on the first climb. Time it right and you'll see the sun kiss the Tetons.

Very dry. Some difficult footing as sand is on rocks. Portion of rim trail will require scrambling but nothing too serious. — 2h 10m
