This trail starts off the main east-west Park Road northwest of the parking areas. The first mile of the trail is mostly singletrack through the cedar scrub. Once you intersect the end of the main Park Road just past the group lodge, the surface switches to a doubletrack which continues until you get to the Hermit's Shack where there is a picnic area. This is a relatively flat section of easy hiking.
