Description

The Swamp White Oak Trail provides quick-and-easy access to a set of diverse ecosystems, as it travels from woodlands to grasslands before connecting with the Illinois Prairie Path - Aurora Branch.

The Arlene Shoemaker Forest Preserve houses an uncommon example of "flatwoods," a clay-based woodland characterized by its ability to hold water above ground during the wet season and then become immensely hard and dry the rest of the year.

Flora & Fauna

Look for swamp white oak and shagbark hickory as you travel through the trees.
