Overview

This rugged route brings visitors to one of the hidden gems that can be found along the Border Route Trail. This short route leads to a scenic waterfall.

Description

Drive to the primitive boat landing at the end of Loon Lake. Park in the designated area and head up the little hill to the signs and follow the easily found trail, Crab Lake Trail of the Border Route Trail. Near the eastern end end of Loon Lake, you'll find the Blow Down of June 2016. It is passable with a few overs and unders and arounds, and this adds to the adventurous feel of the trail. The trail continues to Crab Lake with similar conditions, and eventually comes to a T where the trails lead east and west to the Border Route Trail. This is technically the end of this spur trail, but it doesn't have to be the end of your adventure.

Take the left branch and continue on a rocky, wet and muddy trail for a short way. Soon you'll join the BRT. At the sign, turn left again up and around to the high ground, enjoy the views of Canada and Gunflint Lake. Continue until you hear the falls and come to a fabulous bridge. Stay right and follow the steep trail down to the base of the falls. As always, depending on rainfall, your view may vary.

Flora & Fauna

I was late for the blueberries on the high ground.
