“A short circuit of the area surrounding the Osborne Pond.”— Kenny Slocum
Family Friendly With a playground at the trailhead, and a short, easily accessed trail, this is a great place for the whole family.
A very brief section of dirt road connects the forested section with several well-groomed loops through prairie habitat on the hillside behind the pond. Views along this ridgetop are exceptional, as you are just south of Chicken Ridge, the highest point in the county. The tread is grass, and the rolling terrain is deceptive. If you are pace-obsessed, expect to be surprised. This area also connects with several other trails, allowing one to meander from here through the archery range (be careful!) and larger prairie sections just south of the pond area.
From the ridge top, the trail then winds downhill on a wide path through shrubland/food plots. Lots of berries line the trail throughout the summer, beginning with black caps in the early summer and autumn olive (actually a very tasty berry) come September.
The trail opens back up at the pond, and a wide berm retaining the water leads back to the parking area.
The prairie at Osborne is maintained fairly well and provides wonderful wildflower color throughout the growing season.
