Description

The John Emerson Summit Trail is an excellent short climb to the base of Castle Rock. The trail features dirt and rock path with natural stone stair steps and the occasional railroad tie stairs. The trail features one switchback to take the sting out of the ascent.

One at the top, the base of Castle Rock offers a 360 degree view of the surrounding area of Castle Rock. The rock itself is also an interesting geological formation with many predatory birds finding nesting spots in the pockets high on the rock. Take the Paul Hill Trail (also known as the "East Trail" which is a fire road) down if you want an easier descent on your knees.
