Park hours vary by season, but are generally sunrise to sunset. The parking lot at the visitor center is closed by a locked gate according to visitor center hours.
Winding through high meadows, the trail runs from the park's visitor center to the historic Hornbek Homestead, crossing land once covered by ancient Lake Florissant. To the east of Teller County Road 1, the trail rises above the valley, offering views of the ancient lakebed and the mountain ranges beyond.
