Description

Hike along the Military Road Trail and be transported back to a time of turmoil in the American northeast. Relics from slavery and the French and Indian War can be found along this trail for those who look carefully.

Starting at either parking area, ascend along the trail to the ridge-top through open woodlands peppered with red maple, white oak, and shagbark hickory. Take in the scenic vistas peeking through the tree cover before embarking on your next adventure: searching out the 250-year-old historic artifacts along the trail.

Keep your eyes peeled for the crumbing remains of Fort Johns (a French and Indian War era battlement), as well as an African-American slave burial site.

After enjoying the historic sites along the trail, descend the hillside's grassy doubletrack to the opposite parking area, before reversing direction and heading back the way you came to your car.

Flora & Fauna

Mixed hardwoods dominate the open woodlands along the trail, making for a delightful experience in the fall as they lose their leaves in an eruption of color.
