A run full of rimrock and beautiful views.

Nate Rinfret

Overview

This is a description of the west and middle loops. There is an east loop in the park as well, but it is closed a significant portion of the year for nesting raptors. See the visitors center for closure dates.
Overview to be written.
Features: Birding — Cave — River/Creek — Swimming — Views — Waterfall — Wildlife
Dogs: Leashed

Description

From the parking lot just past the pay booth, descend to the river. Follow the trail to the first split and go left across the bridge and climb to the top of the rimrock. Follow the Rimrock Trail via cairns and obvious wear in the sandstone.

There is a small brown trail sign where you descend from the rimrock to the old dam. As you pass the dam into a meadow continue banking left and following upstream. When you cross the stream you'll immediately climb up to a sidewalk and follow that out to the parking lot. Drift right along the edge of the parking lot and follow the trail going west. It will descend gradually back to the meadow by the old dam.

This time drift left and descend back to the river and follow the river below the old dam. Follow the trail back to where you took your first left and then make the short climb back to the parking lot.

Flora & Fauna

Deer, hawks, rattlesnakes and coyotes are seen often. Occasionally bobcats, cougars and elk have been seen in the park. Trail is fairly open with junipers and cottonwoods dominating the landscape (occasional areas of pine). There are several small caves to explore if you side trip, a waterfall, and good bouldering and short route rock climbs.
