Description

Like the remaining segments of the Ice Age Trail through Kettle Moraine-Northern Unit, this is an essential trail for hiking. This trail offers many rolling hills across numerous glacial moraines, with many surrounding kettles, which are mostly wetlands in this segment. Most of the trail is singletrack although there are some more wide open sections. The forest can be quite dense at times, but often the trail opens up to gorgeous prairies with native plant species, which include wildflower blooms in the summer that are quite photogenic.

Did an out and back from Mauthe to H. Black flys were INTENSE. Beautiful hike though. Getting ready for the Frozen Otter. 18mi — 4h 14m

Overcast cool day in late June. Section near Mauthe Lake a bit overgrown with lots of wet spots and many thrushes in the trail side bushes. 5.2mi — 1h 15m

Kind of warm, but comfortable since it was shaded by trees the whole way. Some flies and mosquitoes, but not bad. Dry trails. 8.9mi — 2h 37m
