Dogs Off-leash

Features Fall Colors · Views

Trails in the West Avon Preserve are usually closed from November to April for deer/elk winter habitat (signs will be posted). Dogs must either be leashed or under voice control. No bikes or motorized vehicles allowed on this trail.

Description

This trail is designated as hiking only on maps and is not given a specific name on the metal trailhead signs at the West Avon Preserve, but old maps call it the Overlook Trail. The aptness of this name is confirmed as you hike south and the dramatic views of the ski areas improve greatly.

This mix of single and doubletrack covers dry, scrubby terrain with open views in all directions. A viewpoint with two picnic tables is an inviting place to rest. Eventually the trail narrows, drops over the edge of the point and fades out. From here you can see Nottingham Lake, the town of Avon and the lower squiggly trails of the West Avon Preserve. Retrace your steps back to the start.

Flora & Fauna

Sage, pinyon, cactus, cedar, scrub. Some drought-tolerant wildflowers. Hawks.
