Luke AT

Dogs Leashed

Features Birding · Fall Colors · Lake · River/Creek · Wildflowers · Wildlife

Description

The trail traverses mostly through the hardwood forest, profuse with mountain laurel on Catoctin Mountain and passes through Gambrills State Park, the Frederick Municipal Watershed, Cunningham Falls State Park, and Catoctin Mountain Park.

Although the trail lacks many outstanding features other than the White Rocks Overlook, spur trails lead to a number of other beautiful vistas, following along Fishing Creek before coming near to Cunningham Falls.

Camping is only permitted at organized campgrounds in the parks.

From the trail's northern terminus is a 2-mile road connection to the Appalachian Trail: Wolfsville Road to Pen Mar Park section.

Grueling Hike, the aquifers were overflowing and I had to ford streams about two dozen times. Lots of solitude, remote trail in the woods. 20.5mi — 7h 30m

This trail is grueling, if nothing else. It winds its way through the wilderness, across mountains and streams. Be aware that this crosses many creeks, which if there has been rain, are overflowing. The center section south of White Rocks lack good blazes, especially at intersections. Do not attempt this trail if you are a beginner. It is a very difficult trail physically. Oct 1, 2018
