Description

This challenging hike gains its elevation quickly but steadily, so it is a good efficient workout. The first half of the trail and the latter part of the trail are for foot-traffic only. However the middle part of the trail is now on open to mountain bikers, so hikers should be aware.

Start from the end of Iron Mountain Court and head through a couple small clearings before becoming enveloped in a huge aspen forest. Enjoy a brief stint in pine trees as you climb ever upwards before emerging onto the open ridge just below the summit of Iron Mountain. Next, the Iron Canyon Trail crosses Mid Mountain Trail. Originally you could reach the top of Iron Mountain by staying straight on the Iron Canyon Trail, but now there is a very large "Private Property / No Trespassing" sign.

For the new route, one turns right on Mid Mountain Trail, then after a few hundred yards take the Iron Mountain Trail. This part of the Iron Mountain Trail allows mountain biking. After about 1.5 miles, one reaches a dirt road. Go up this dirt road for a few hundred yards until a smaller path branches off north and heads steeply up to the Iron Mountain summit. From here you'll have great views over the Park City and the Canyons ski area.
