This trail is closed May 1 - July 15 for bighorn sheep lambing season.
This short out-and-back offers inspired views of "the Crater," a large bowl-shaped indentation in the mountainside that was created by an ancient volcanic eruption.
Need to Know
This hike takes place at very high elevation. Even though it is quite short, please be cognizant of your physical abilities before setting out.
From Poudre Lake, located directly off of Trail Ridge Road (closed winters) near the Alpine Visitors Center, hike up this fairly steep trail as it switchbacks its way up the mountainside. The trail passes through some alpine coniferous forest before popping out into open tundra.
At the top of the trail, you'll be able to peer out at the crater and surrounding peaks.
