The Arkansas River runs next to the fort. After an evening of thundershowers, the river runs higher than normal.

The trail is essentially a mowed path along the river as it heads toward the bottom lands where trees grow in abundance.
Looking toward the high plains and the entrance to the historic site.
Sustained by the Arkansas River, this grove of cottonwood trees provides relief in the heat of the day and helped people survive on the Plains in the 1800s and 1900s.
A small rabbit sits next to the trail along the marsh. The marsh is a great place to see animals and birds throughout the day.
