Cinder Cone with Fantastic Lava Beds at its base, are seen by hikers approaching the northern end of Rainbow Lake to Nobles Trail.
Approaching Cinder Cone from the south on Nobles Emigrant Trail (East), a hardy fir tree grows in the volcanic sand and ash. At the base of Cinder Cone on the right are some Painted Dunes.
Looking across the volcanic sand, the Painted Dunes are on the left. The green area is a tiny seasonal wet area due to recent snow melt. Mt. Hoffman, 7,833 ft., is on the left behind the Painted Dunes.
Fairfield Peak (left) and distant Lassen Peak (right), 10,457 ft., are stunning against the barren volcanic ash on the west side of Cinder Cone.
Fantastic Lava Beds coated with red, oxidized volcanic ash/cinders on the right. In the distance behind Fantastic Lava Beds is the gently sloped, forested Prospect Peak, an ancient shield volcano.
Painted Dunes on the southeast side of Cinder Cone, seen from Nobles Emigrant Trail (East). In the distance to the southeast is Mt. Hoffman, 7,833 ft.
