The valley ahead is the start of the Pine Creek drainage, high up here near Summit Lake. Pine Creek and its tributaries eventually flow into Fremont Lake, and on to Pinedale. Looking south from the CDT near Summit Lake on a gorgeous September morning.
The upper reaches of Pine Creek, just about a half mile from Summit Lake, its source, are in the steep sided valley ahead. The trail, going south, descends to cross the creek and then climb out of the creek valley in the distance.
