A hermit crab crosses the trail. If you keep on the lookout, frogs, lizards, and crabs can be seen scurrying across the trail beneath you.

Western Samoa can be seen through a break in the trees.
The final push to the summit includes a climb up a series of steps. Some of the steps were in need of repair, so test the step before you put your full weight on it.
The last half mile to a mile is pretty exposed as the forest opens up around the trail, so proper sun protection is recommended.
Looking across the bay, you can see Matafao Peak towering over Pago Pago.
Pago Pago Harbor sits below the summit of Mount Alava. You can see where the coral reefs are in the bay below.
