Description

This is a monument to Gilbert Leigh who died while sheep hunting on September 14, 1884. It was erected by local ranchers in his memory. This sandstone monument can be seen from US Hwy 16 in the turnout below. Hiking to the monument requires a tough out-and-back hike, but the views from the monument are simply breathtaking!

All-Day Hike: To view the monument from the highway, pull into the turnoff on US Hwy 16. There is a sign board with a brief history of the monument. To see the monument itself, a 14-mile round-trip, strenuous hike is required. For trail details, see the Leigh Monument Out-and-Back featured hike.

Muddy, Snowy - There is plenty of muddy areas in all the approach trail to the Mistymoon Lake, from the snow still melting and often rains this year, still creating many water paths on the side slopes of the trail. Then, if you are going to climb Cloud Peak, there is still a good amount of snow in the last half a mile, no need for crampons or micro spikes in my opinion, as you'll sink into the snow when the sun heats it up. Just be prepared to traverse some non-dangerous/exposed snowfields to reach the summit.
