Description

Every bit of this hike is magical. The trail is rugged and rocky with great views. Once you get to the top, the lake and the waterfall above it make the pain of the climb worth every bit! I've never seen water so clear!

Short Hike: A paved walking path will take you the short distance from the parking lot to the base of the trail leading up to Hanging Lake.

Gem Type: Waterfall

8.27.2018 We arrived at the pkg lot ~9am and found plenty of places to park although by the time we left at ~11:30 there was not a spot to be had. Guessing that would not be the case earlier in the summer as the lot would most likely be filled much earlier. Coming from Beaver Creek, west to Glenwood canyon-I70 has to be one of the most beautiful stretches of interstate in the country so the drive was an awesome way to start the day. The trail was not too crowded and people were always pleasant about standing aside for us to pass if we had a faster pace. There are a lot of boulders to navigate in the beginning which eventually becomes a rather narrow rocky path. The trail is mostly shady and the sound of the rolling stream makes for a very pleasant, moderate-level hike which is TOTALLY worth the climb when you reach the aqua-blue lake below the cliff I'm guessing was the "valley" the lake fell from. You can luxuriate on benches and take pictures at this wonder but I encourage you to continue up the short trail to "Sprouting Lake" above which also has a gorgeous sprouting waterfall that comes out of a hole in the rocks. This was a gem of a hike and did not take the entire day to feel accomplished. Aug 28, 2018

Worth the climb. Be sure to check out spouting rock while you’re there, it’s worth the extra effort and much less crowded by tourists.

Snowy, Icy - Passable but very icy and very slick in areas. Take it slow. Microspikes (yaktrax) are a great idea, as are poles.
