Trail is open year-round but the western side of the loop can be flooded in spots during Spring high water on the St. Croix. There are no vehicle fees or permits required.

Need to Know

There is parking, with a pit toilet, but no camping, at the Highway 70 Landing. There is camping, a pit toilet, and a small boat (canoe or kayak) dock at the campsite and picnic area at the end of Tennessee Road. There is a state park campground (with fees) directly south of Highway 70.

Description

This is a simple loop (Loops A, B, and E on the NPS map) that runs between a parking area along Highway 70 to the south and a campground off Tennessee Road to the north. The western side of the loop runs along the St. Croix River and the eastern side runs through the forest on higher ground. The west side is the most scenic, with great views of the river along the way.

About 0.1 mile before you reach the campground, you'll pass across the top of some sandstone cliffs. These are not the most dramatic such cliffs along the St. Croix (or the Mississippi River) but they are still interesting. There are a couple of spots where you can carefully make your way down to see the cliffs from below.

The NPS map also shows trails (Loops C and D) north of Tennessee Road. With the exception of the obvious trail that connects the end of the road to a great campsite along the river, the other trails here are little used and hard to follow. They are not recommended.

Flora & Fauna

Deer ticks are common here and can carry Lyme disease.
