Just before Manzana East Trail starts to climb, this one breaks off to immediately cross the Manzana Creek and start what is, at first, a gentle climb. The area is rocky and sun baked. After navigating a few twists, it gets a little steeper and less rocky or sunny. About 2 miles along, under the largest of the trees, is Big Cone Spruce Camp. The camp has a spring (may run dry seasonally) and picnic tables. After the camp, it steepens again and leaves the trees behind. Chaparral can get tight depending on the recent trail work. Under show, it bends downward, set to throw the snow down the back of a shirt of any unsuspecting hiker who might come.
