The trail is open year-round but there are snowy plover restrictions in effect from March 15 through September 15. No persons are allowed on the dry sand or dune portions of the beach at that time. Hiking is allowed only on the trail or wet sand portion of the beach. Dogs are not allowed at anytime, leashed or not. This area can be very wet during the winter months.

Need to Know

The trailhead is at the Oregon Dunes Day Use Area, where there is ample paved parking and a pit toilet. This is a federal fee area - $5/vehicle/day or a valid recreation pass are required.

Description

The trail starts on the north side of the parking area (near a kiosk) and is paved for a short distance then turns to dirt as it takes you down into the dunes. Once on the sand, you pretty much go straight west for 1 mile on a hard-packed trail (marked with posts) through the sand and then on a clear trail cut through the coastal forest and the foredune to the beach at trail marker #113.

Once on the beach, head south on it for about 1.5 miles to trail marker #114, your exit point back through the dunes. The obvious trail runs east at first, cutting close to Tahkenitch Creek, before turning north to follow large post markers through deep sand and a clear singletrack through several tree islands.

Your options at the end are to reconnect with the trail that brought you down from the north side of the parking area or cut up the dunes to the viewing platforms on the south side of the parking area.
