Description

Leaving the parking lot, you can follow the orange markings to rock hop your way across Rough Creek. This is not recommended when there are high waters.

From there the trail is clear and well-marked.The first few miles of the trail follow the river as it spread over a large gravely flood plain.

After passing the confluence of the Karangarua River with the Copland, the river becomes thinner and steeper. After six miles you come upon the Arcitect Creek hut which is a good spot to take a break.

From here the trail gets steeper as it clings to the side of the canyon walls. You make a couple of creek crossing on bridges before you finally arrive at the Welcome Flat Hut.

Enjoy the hot springs.

Flora & Fauna

The canopy is dominated by the Southern Rata which has beautiful red flowers.

The West Coast of the South Island is well-known as one of the wildest and wettest regions in the entire world. The Copland Valley track is one of the most popular tramping destinations on the West Coast with its natural hot pools a strong draw..
