This is a great option for viewing abundant wildlife. Here and there are large flocks of sheep. In these fields there are several passeriforms, such as the tail picata (Pica pica), the hoopoe (Upupa epops), the Cuckoo-rabilongo (Clamator glandarius), the sparrow lark (Galerida cristata), the kingfisher (Lanius excubitor) or the bee-eater (Merops apiaster) and, in winter, some lavercas (Alauda arvensis), among others.

Aqui e ali vislumbram-se grandes rebanhos de ovelhas. As espécies de ovelha Churra do Campo ou Merino da Beira Baixa são cada vez mais raras, mas durante anos foram raças dominantes na paisagem pastoril na região do Campo beirão ao longo da ribeira da Ocreza. Nestes campos aparecem diversos passeriformes como a pega rabuda (Pica pica), a poupa (Upupa epops), o cuco-rabilongo (Clamator glandarius), a cotovia-de-poupa (Galerida cristata), o icanço
-real (Lanius excubitor), ou o abelharuco (Merops apiaster) e, no Inverno, algumas lavercas (Alauda arvensis), entre outros.

The Marateca Route is developed between the village of Soalheira, in the municipality of Fundão, and the northern banks of the Santa Águeda Dam in the parish of Louriçal do Campo, Castelo Branco County. Marateca is named after one of the main farms of the rural landscape situated on the edge of the barrage.

The route is overlooking the southern slope of the Serra da ardunha, following rural roads that pass through secular farms where grazing and agriculture are values assets of the territory. On the banks of the large dammed lake are perfect habitats for the numerous species of birds that nest here like the white stork (Ciconia ciconia) or black stork (Ciconia nigra) and its autumnal migrations, the red heron (Ardea (Ardea cinerea), the small white heron (Egretta garzetta), the red heron (Ardea cinerea), the white heron (Egretta garzetta) ) and the water hen (Gallinula chloropus), among others. In spring, we can hear the common nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos), the black-crowned warbler (Sylvia atricapilla) and the black-footed cat (Oriolus oriolus).

The whole route is a wonderful place for lovers of photography and birdwatching.

A Rota da Marateca desenvolve-se entre a vila da Soalheira, no concelho do Fundão, e as margens norte da Barragem de Santa Águeda na freguesia do Louriçal do Campo, concelho de Castelo Branco. Marateca é nome de uma das principais Quintas da paisagem rural situada na orla da barrage. O percurso é sobranceiro à vertente sul da Serra da ardunha seguindo por caminhos rurais que atravessam Quintas seculares onde o pastoreio e a agricultura são valores
activos do território. Nas margens do imenso plano de água da Barragem encontramos os habitats perfeitos para a presença de inúmeras espécies de aves que aqui nidificam como a cegonha branca (Ciconia ciconia) ou cegonha preta (Ciconia nigra) e nas suas migrações outonais, a garça vermelha (Ardea purpura), o Colhereiro (Platalea leucorodia),
o mergulhão de crista (Podiceps cristatus), o pato trombeteiro (Anas clypeata), a garça boieira (Bulbucus íbis), a garça real (Ardea cinerea), a garça branca pequena (Egretta garzetta) e a galinha d'água (Gallinula chloropus) entre outros. Na Primavera, podem ouvir-se o rouxinol-comum (Luscinia megarhynchos), a toutinegra-de-barrete-preto (Sylvia atricapilla) e o papa-figos (Oriolus oriolus). Todo o percurso é local privilegiado para os amantes de fotografia e de birdwatching.
