If you do decide to shorten your hike and use Powerline Road (shell/gravel) as an exit route, know that it is flooded and impassible (full of alligators) in a section about a mile east of its intersection with Park Road. There is a trail that goes around it, but if you're looking for a quick exit, be prepared to jump back on trails to bypass.

Myakka is a fantastic place for birding, hiking, backpacking, horseback riding, and biking. This is the main artery of their trail system. There are many off-shoots that can change the length of this trip or connect to primitive camp sites to make this into a multi-day adventure. Some primitive campsites do have water by pump, but they aren't always reliable and need to be treated.

This trail meanders through a mix of trees and fields. Be prepared for a lot of direct sun. I've never seen large crowds out here, especially as you get away from the main road. I cannot stress enough that water is a challenge here so check with the rangers and plan ahead.
