Need to Know

There is no water along the route. Wear bright clothes during [bow] hunting seasons: mid-April to mid-May (turkey), September (elk and turkey), November (deer and turkey).

Description

From the Soda Pocket Trailhead, follow the Opportunity Trail 0.5 mile northwest to the Little Horse Mesa Trailhead marker post. Take a breath and drink. Follow the trail 500 feet straight up the draw gaining over 300 feet elevation with NO switchbacks.

At the top, recover and catch your breath while cooling off to the breezes that flow over the mesa. Then lose it again while gaping at the spectacular views of the Sugarite Canyon and plains beyond.

The trail follows the cliff face for about 0.5 mile for continuous eye-popping views overlooking the several hundred foot drop-off.

Do I need to caution against getting close to the cliff edge? I hope not!

Flora & Fauna

Pine and aspen trees. Look for elk, turkey, deer, and grouse. Black bears also frequent the area.
