Description

Parking for the trailhead is at the Red Rock Ranger Station. You can find the start of the trail - there's a clear sign - at the southwest end of the parking lot.

The trail begins by passing through a metal gate; signs indicate the gate should stay closed. This beginning section of trail is grassy and twists and turns a bunch of times. A short while later you'll arrive at another metal gate; again signs indicate to keep the gate closed. The next two miles are an easy gradient with a few ups and downs.

At about the 2 mile mark, you should see the intersection of the Hot Loop Trail. Unless you intend to do 22 miles, I'd suggest continuing straight on the Woods Canyon Trail. Shortly beyond this intersection, you'll cross the Wilderness Boundary line. The trail will continue to follow Dry Beaver Creek into the canyon-depending on the time of year there may be water running.

While there aren't any typical Sedona Red Rock views, there are some beautiful sections of trail and great river views if water is running. After the Wilderness Boundary, the trail will continue another approximately 3 miles before you'll turn around and retrace your steps. The entire hike is a pretty easy gradient; the major challenge is avoiding the "ankle biters," aka prickly pear cactus and other sharp plants.

This is a great hike if you're trying to avoid the crowds.
