Description

This trail is a challenging ascent into the Santa Catalina front range wilderness. The trail starts more moderate and gets progressively rougher the further you make it from the trailhead.

The trail does not go directly to the finger, instead it contours around Mt. Kimball before terminating at the junction with Ventana Trail #98 and Esperero Trail #25.

It is most often used as an out-and-back trail and is frequently visited by locals. The trail consist of typical desert conditions which include rocks of all sizes, a plethora of dirt, and plants that poke. The initial mile or so will be more forgiving filled with Sonoran vegetation before you start the climb up the slopes above the gorge.

Flora & Fauna

The trail begins in Sonoran Desert scrub, briefly enters riparian scrub, climbs through scrub grassland to Madrean oak woodland and oak-pine woodland through a couple of patches of ponderosa pine forest.

For more information on the flora of the area, click here. This guidebook also has a vertebrate fauna list. There are 615 plant taxa and 222 vertebrate species as outline by the author who has hiked the peak 1700 times over the past 39 years.
