Family Friendly This trail is challenging, but not too challenging for children and elderly.

Due to nearby lakes and rivers, this trail system tends to flood late spring each year. If the trail system says closed, do not enter and return after the trail has had adequate time to dry. The CITA (Central Iowa Trail Association) website will have updates about all area closures.

Description

This trail starts by the first parking lot. It is all singletrack trail with lots of hills, twists, and a moderate amount of technical footing. This trail is challenging, but it is pleasantly meandering with a diversity of trees shading the way. This route runs alongside lakes, across very small bridges, and along small bluffs and ridges.

If you hike clockwise, start at the first parking lot and look for the sign just north of the restroom/just on the other side of the road that you turned in from where you'll start in on Coal Miner's Daughter. This route ends at an intersection where you'll pass right by a small parking lot where the route meets a bathroom, the paved Summerset Trail, and a local shooting range.

To extend your hike, follow the connector trail towards the road and with a hard right, you'll find the Missing Link Trail.

Flora & Fauna

There are wildflowers, eagles, owls, deer, chipmunks, raccoons, squirrels, foxes, and an occasional coyote or wild cat. Beware of the poison ivy.
