Description

This trail features 26 miles of typical Central Texas hill country scenery; limestone cliffs, junipers and oaks abound, with plenty of wildflowers in the spring.

The trail passes through five Army Corps of Engineers operated parks. The trail passes by the Crockett Gardens Springs which flows in the lake. The area is covered with ferns and other greenery. There are also three primitive backcountry camping areas along the trail. The trail also passes over the dam.

The trail can be hikeed from any trailhead at any of the parks. While there are not very steep portions, the trail does roll up and down and is very rocky. In the summer it is very hot and dusty. There are many nice vistas overlooking the lake to stop and enjoy.

The lake is almost always in view and boaters are plentiful. Some areas of the trail get close to houses and neighborhoods, so at times it does not feel very remote, even though you may be a long way from the trailhead.

Flora & Fauna

Juniper ash (locally called cedars), live oaks, wildflowers, dewberries. Squirrels, deer, armadillos, rabbits and various birds are likely around.

Hiked the section from Jim Hogg Park to Sawyer Park, our and back. Very nice section with lots of shade. Will be great in the true heat of summer. 8.7mi — 3h 00m
