Aspen Flat can be accessed from the north or south. The southern trailhead is reached by driving a long ways up FR 079 from N. Creek Rd. (101). This option is probably more suitable for lower clearance vehicles. Higher clearance and 4x4 or AWD is recommended for the northern trailhead, but that's probably a nice point to start and do an out and back hike.

From the northern trailhead, you'll work your way pretty steeply uphill. The best advice is to just continue up the trail until it feels like you've gone far enough. Towards the southern end, it gets a bit less scenic, and even steeper in spots, so you may decide you've had enough. But the northern 2/3 of the trail provides excellent scenery, especially during fall aspen season.

Massive aspen groves are bisected by beautiful pastures with stellar views. The grade is very steep in places and the trail mostly follows the fall line - it can be loose, and sometimes a little chewed up. Also, given its remote and underused nature, expect to find your fair share of downed trees along this trail.
