The Garden Wall [Suggest Edits]

The Garden Wall is a striking feature that can be experienced in many different ways. Whether you visit from the road or hike to the huge cliff face, you won't be disappointed. Though the high alpine cliff band and the surrounding meadows are dramatic in their own right, the profusion of wildflowers and local flora really make this area stand out. Visit in the mid-late summer months, and you might catch the wildflowers when they are in bloom. There aren't many trees in this special area, and at times the lush meadow carpet will seem to extend endlessly.

While it is a beautiful and enjoyable sight from the comfort of your vehicle on Going-to-the-Sun Road, the best way to experience this incredible gem is to hike though the middle of it. The Highline Trail will lead intrepid visitors through this incredible landscape, bringing you closer to marmots, pika, and the nimble-footed goats and sheep that all graze on the slopes of the Garden Wall. As an added bonus, hikers on the Highline Trail will be able to peek over the edge of the wall down into the Grinell Glacier.

On the Road: While this sight can be overlooked from the car, hiking to the Garden Wall along the Highline Trail is recommended. It's an all day, or even an overnight route, so plan accordingly.
